A legend of West End theatre, British playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourn has written and produced more than 70 full-length plays that have appeared on London’s most prolific stages. The 16th annual Master Playwright Festival highlights his extensive body of work that spans several decades and has earned more than 35 awards – including two Oliviers, two Molières and a Tony.
Known for his farces and comedies, Ayckbourn’s work is riddled with entertaining commentary on marriage, social status and the woes of the British lower-middle class. Now aged 76, Ayckbourn is a playwriting powerhouse and shows no signs of slowing down as he continues to produce new work for the stage on practically a yearly basis.
